Product Manager
Description
The CP Product motto is...
Continuously deliver value that our clients/partners love – and work for the business
To do this we need a series of specialties working seamlessly together.
- Viable
- The cost of building and supporting it
- The benefit of the value it provides
- Usable
- Low resistance / gravity toward the value intended by it
- Ease and Joy of using it
- Feasible
- Can it be built w/in the appetite we have
- Can it be iterated upon / extensible
- = Valuable
- Important to those it is trying to serve
- Those with the desire are unsatisfied with their current solution
Usually, these responsibilities are broken into Designers own usability, Engineers own feasibility, and Product Managers own viability. Here, we actively try and blur those lines.
Your job as a Product Manager is to ensure we are always doing the most valuable work possible. You are a defacto leader on your squad... making sure everything is running smoothly. You have no more power than your trio-mates, but unlike the expectations of Product Owners there is an expectation that you are going to help guide the squad to success.
Say more about "the differences"?
- Product Owners and Product Managers
- Product Managers have all of the responsibility of a Product Owner (making sure everything is running smoothly), with the added responsibility of leading discovery.
- Product Managers and Product Marketing Managers
- Both ask "what value can we deliver". PMs focus more on creating the value... PMMs focus more on ensuring folks get to the value. PMMs focus on the market and buyer more... PMs focus on the buyer and user more. Both focus on stakeholders, but PMMs focus more on Sales while PMs focus more on Support. They work best together.
- Technical PMs vs PMs
- Technical PMs have heightened expectation as it pertains to things like data and interacting with partners. PMs must have a named tech lead on their trio. Technical PMs can have a group of very senior engineers without a named tech lead. Technical PMs are likely on Platform-style squads, while traditional value-stream squads will more than likely not need a technical PM
Alternative titles
Some individuals care deeply about their title. Some organizations try to make it clear what titles are supported synonyms to the official title so that the employee can use whichever they resonate with the most. This is a personal branding thing that is 100% optional.
