Continuous Improvement of how we work.

I love it when I see folks iterate on how we work, and the benefits of it are as clear as they are with this iteration the tech leads made.

  1. Using Slack's Canvas as a way to drive more transparency = ❤️
  2. Having concise, easy-to-consume, well organized notes from a meeting is transparency at the highest level I'm aware of. It shows incredible communication, collaboration, and sets a high water mark for how all teams/meetings should be run. In my L10s we usually take notes in Asana, but we don't post them in a place where folks can see / consume them. Also, Canvas allows for threads and conversations to continue, where Asana doesn't do a great job of this. I'm going to add this as a headline to every L10 I'm in and see if they want to switch to posting our notes in a more transparent / collaboration friendly way!!!

The topics that y'all discussed were great as well. Many of them had clear observations => feelings. Some lacked a clear unmet need and a specific request, but that is totally ok. Observations are the MOST IMPORTANT part of good issue solving, candor, transparency, collaboration, teamwork, feedback giving, etc. So y'all are doing the best part and I'm sure if I were in the meeting I'd have heard the unmet needs and requests.

Love this... keep going... keep growing!!

THIS IS THE WAY!!!!!

So much to love about this.

❤️ - Instructions... in the FigJam there is a "How to use an Oppty Solution Tree" section that cites the sources, and walks us through everything we need to know to traverse this tree! I also love that it is an iteration on other oppty-tree instructions floating around out there. We MUST improve how we go about doing the work, and David showed that in a big way with this.

❤️ - The oppties... are mostly from the perspective of the hiring manager, which is just so excellent!!

❤️ - The solutions... are plentiful and very relevant!! Only one oppty has only one solution... the rest have 2+... which indicated the oppty is just that, an oppty and not a solution in an oppty disguise!!

❤️ - The experiments... exist! Most of the time folks skip the experiment part and stay focused on the solutions. I had decided we weren't ready to talk experimentation, because many of our experiments didn't have an initial hypothesis, weren't short enough to have the cost/benefit needed, and weren't measured in a way that was clear to all. So instead I've nudged us towards KIS measures, some born of Launch effectiveness measures, and helping Core introduce a multivariate testing solution. But, seeing those orange circles gives me an indication that my man David is ready to continue to elevate our quest to iterate our way to exponential results/success.

Love this David and Chris!!

Now the next test is how do we keep it this clear once we get folks collaborating with us... solutions that impact multiple outcomes and oppties... and how do we keep this tree green. For now, I'm absolutely wow'ed!!!

Let's start this with a few beliefs I have:

  1. I expect Tech Leads to, well, lead. However, that comes in many forms.
  2. The hardest part of any project is the start and the finish.
  3. The start is hard because this is the moment you know the least, the moment where the members of the team are most misaligned.

I've seen hundreds of different ways to start projects. Some use templates such as Project Briefs or Pitches. Sometimes design takes the lead and starts wireframes/fat-marker sketches. Sometimes Tech Leads will jump in and start listing out spikes/dives needed.

All of these ways have their advantages and disadvantages. However, IMO nothing, and I mean nothing gets a project kicked off better than an old-fashioned flow chart.

Get to a whiteboard (digital whiteboard) and start drawing out the assumptions, the open questions, the flow as we know it today.

Alignment is one of the hardest things to do when you are moving fast and trying to be agile. But, the simplicity of blocks and lines help tremendously.

David was just put on this project, and already he's asked amazing questions, uncovered potential rabbit holes and no go's, and I for one feel incredibly confident in the project now knowing how well he has his head wrapped around it already.

Well done 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

I love that we are making decisions in a data-influenced way.

"Do our applicants use Dropbox"?

Seemingly innocuous feature right? Well, no... giving more options clutters up the UI and forces the applicant to think. We want them to apply, not to be thinking about if they have their resume in Dropbox or not.

Also 190k applications with resumes and 316 that used dropbox.... for those of you counting that is about 0.001%.

Love sunsetting features that don't serve us. Love doing that using quantitative analysis.

That doc y'all... clarity is an understatement!

First it starts with the issue clearly and concisely stated ❤️

  • bonus points because it had images

Then it puts the clients first by not only saying "this is a poor experience", which is an opinion, but it has links to Zendesk tickets 🙌🏾

Then he did analysis of the data, which takes away all doubt to the extent of the problem 😭 (tears of joy)

Then he did a dive into not 1, not 2, but 3 options ✨

But here is the part I love the most... the recommendation!! With nuanced options in the recommendation as well.

This is one of the best docs I've seen when choosing between buy vs build. Well done David... no notes!
