Product & Engineering's Ability: Collaboration

Description

You collaborate with grace and enthusiasm, representative of our company values (get agreements, tough discussions, and highlight what's working).

Milestone 1

(adds 1 mile to your journey)

I have observed this person showing a consistent, comfortable, continuous, and clear positive impact to a squad when wielding this ability, and therefore I would put them in situations where they can employ this ability with only a small amount of guidance

  • When working with others, you treat collaboration as a discussion rather than demands if folks have differing opinions.
  • You ask clarifying questions about anything you don't completely understand.
  • You engage, bring your whole self and offer opinions when collaborating
  • You listen to all opinions when making decisions

Milestone 2

(adds 3 miles to your journey)

I have observed this person showing a consistent, comfortable, continuous, and clear positive impact to a squad when wielding this ability, and therefore I would put them in situations where they can employ this ability, with no assistance as well as being a trusted active or passive mentor to others

  • You're thorough when you review others' work.
  • Your suggestions are phrased in a way that stays true to our company values but is still business and user-goal oriented (ex: less debate over pixel perfect, more debate over value)
  • Your feedback is clear, thorough, and sometimes includes edge cases.
  • You help identify a decision maker when the best decision isn’t clear and backed by everyone collaborating

Milestone 3

(adds 6 miles to your journey)

I have observed this person showing a consistent, comfortable, continuous, and clear positive impact to multiple squads when wielding this ability, and therefore I would put them in situations where they can employ this ability as well as being considered an expert within this discipline

  • You offer resources when reviewing others' work when it helps illustrate your suggestion.
  • You use collaboration as an opportunity to teach teammates about the app and more general platform considerations.
  • You're sensitive to the level of experience of the person you're working with and tailor your explanations accordingly.
  • You anticipate questions and proactively document anything that won't be obvious to stakeholders.
  • Your feedback is clear, thorough, and includes edge cases.
  • You proactively reach out to team members to solve problems together before moving forward.

Milestone 4

(adds 12 miles to your journey)

I have observed this person showing a consistent, comfortable, continuous, and clear positive impact to a squad when wielding this ability, and therefore I would put them in situations where they can not only employ this ability but where they set the tone for this at the company level

  • You inspire others' work to be better with resources, questions, and challenging their assumptions
  • You create a safe, positive culture with your expectations and behavior.
  • You create standards and expectations around collaboration.
  • You seek to improve and create moments of collaboration at a strategic level, closing the gap between engineering and other disciplines.

Milestone 5

(adds 20 miles to your journey)

I have observed this person showing a consistent, comfortable, continuous, and clear positive impact to not just internal teams but the community/industry in general when wielding this ability, and they are recognized by the community/industry as an expert

  • You influence executive-level members in the organization to change what it means to collaborate
  • You guide and coach other members of the community on how to better collaborate

Donnie is also very patient with me. He has been a great (frontend) partner on a shared project. He’s always been able to help me improve something I’ve written and or walk me through some of his tips on reviewing. I really appreciate the atmosphere you bring any time we collaborate as well. Thanks

This is long overdue. Ethan is always very patient with me and no matter how trivial of a question I have, he always gives me his full attention and time. I have been trying to enhance my frontend skills and he is always very willing to help out and I really appreciate it.

If you haven't had the pleasure of working with John, in code or otherwise, you're missing out!

He is so skilled at helping me feel like he really is working with me, not like he is dragging me along. When we pair and I miss something obvious, he's great at pointing things out and explaining them in a way that never leads me to feel awkward or stupid.

John is great at bringing brightness to the room/Zoom. His light-hearted nature always keeps the mood positive, even when we are both staring at the screen and have no idea what to do next 😅

And finally, he keeps his opinions weakly held, always being happy to try out another idea/listen to someone else's thoughts rather than claiming his are the best. I feel so valued as his teammate because of this!

Thanks, John, for being so great to work with!

"Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth" - Mike Tyson

The skills squad had a plan, we did user testing where we learned what maybe wasn't working or didn't make sense (not as violent as getting punched but you get the idea I hope), and we are adjusting the plan. The challenge is that because we are actively building on the old plan this new plan doesn't really have many artifacts like fleshed out wireframes. We are having conversations with various stakeholders and as a squad and sometimes not everyone from the squad is present during the conversation. This easily leads to confusion and uneasiness that if left to linger can lead to some much larger problems.

Well, this is how about how Carolyn didn't let things linger and brought up in a message to the squad on how she was feeling and how she needed a more clear plan/picture. We, as a squad, immediately started to have a conversation and get clarity and are now in a much better place in terms of alignment. If she hadn't spoken up now, who knows how long we would have went with having misalignment and what troubles our squad could have had down the road.

Thanks Carolyn!

Brandon joined Practice at a challenging time: we were in the middle of the quarter, just starting on an initiative that hadn't been one of our planned goals and wasn't fully fleshed out. In the midst of that, we didn't take the time to help him understand Practice/our team and squad workflows like we should have.

He handled it all with grace though, not giving us a hard time and constantly looking for ways to make us better. He's brought some ideas to Practice that have helped us work more collaboratively and in my opinion, have helped us all stay better aligned in terms of where we are in the project and what the next steps are.

It's hard to make us better when we don't make it easy for you to get your feet under you, but Brandon did just that. Thanks Brandon!
