Observations about Haley M.

Observation created about 4 years ago

As a former member of the Practice Squad I still lurk in their channel, and today I was go glad I do because I got to see Haley in action. As Tech Lead she brought some concerns from the practice devs to the whole squad to discuss: things that were slowing delivery down and had the potential to endanger the squad's objectives. True to our company value of asking clarifying questions, Haley explained the situation, asked for specific answers, and the squad is going to meet to decide on them. She also asked to be the point person for technical questions, empowering the other practice devs to stay focused on building awesome software. Haley, thanks for seeing a need and stepping in to meet it, and for a great example of one of the many actions technical leadership can look like.

I've seen Haley write out a ton of well thought-out shout-outs for folks, and it always injects a significant amount of joy into my day. Not just when they're for me, but it's just nice seeing someone be so enthusiastic about breeding a culture of gratitude and appreciation for our teammates.

It's easy to see something good, have a dull sense of appreciation for it, and then move on with your day. But it seems like when Haley witnesses something that someone is doing right, she's doing so with a lens of love and celebration. It becomes more than a fleeting chuckle or feeling of being impressed, it amplifies the positive thing into something more. It highlights what's working and makes everyone feel good in the process!! It's positive reinforcement that gives other people on the team an opportunity to learn from something they might not have otherwise seen.

Haley is great at making people feel good about what they're doing well, but she also has a tactful approach to giving criticism. She's reviewed a ton of my PRs to date, and has given me a healthy amount of feedback. I'm glad that she stated she gets low-key excited when she picks up one of my PRs, because I feel the same way when she does a review for me. I know I'll have really QUALITY feedback that's delivered in a way that doesn't make me feel dumb or like I've done something wrong.

It comes full circle, because I think her ability and willingness to give gentle criticism makes the aforementioned compliments feel all the more valuable and genuine. The best compliments are those that come from someone you know isn't just trying to placate you, so that's just another reason these patented Haley Shout-Outs feel precious!

This is my updated affirmation of how much I appreciate having Haley as a teammate, which is a sentiment that originated pretty much as soon as I started at Lessonly! 🎉

I am beyond impressed by this initiative and overall craftspersonship

:sob: :point_left::skin-tone-5: tears of pure joy.

More specific:

I think the main thing I’m going to do is create a Practice Tech Debt epic (I want to figure out what some of our biggest pieces of debt are)

  • It is incredibly easy to just keep trucking along and idly hope someone else does something you know to be right. It is incredibly difficult to stop, and say "this... we... can be better"....

break them up into the tiniest and most informed stories I possibly can. That way, when we have awkward amounts of time, or we just want a semi-mindless task to do as a break, we can grab one of those stories and execute it. This will hopefully help us tackle things better than stories to remove an entire feature.

  • ... It is damn near impossible to then actually devise a way to do that which actually has a shot of being adopted.

if y’all have any ideas for things I could add, please comment them here. I’m especially wondering if those of you who have been working in the front end for ziggeo know of any components we can refactor or :knife:

  • One of the rarest things is to be able to do all of that and bring others along with you.

The last three ingredients of the "Sense and Respond" + "Goal Setting" + "Systems Management" trio of multiplicative leadership (AR3 trademark pending :fblaugh:) are:

  1. Establishing an observable and actionable feedback loop
  2. Inspiring others to care about that feedback loop in such a way that it changes their behavior
  3. Learn from the loops taken, and make the thing you are trying to accomplish better after every iteration

I want to be crystal clear... I put these here, not to diminish the absolute joy I have about the slack post in question... but, hopefully, as inspiration to (and maybe a bit of a guide to) continue going :slightlysmilingface:

Regardless of what happens, the sheer awareness, initiative, and thoughtfulness is worthy of significant recognition :skin-tone-5:

As we all know, our friend Gardee is moving on to a new chapter in his journey. He's been an amazing teammate and leaves some pretty big shoes to fill.

Specifically for a few critical roles for Practice.

Enter Ross, Kim, and Haley to save the day!

For Practice, Haley was tag-teaming Delivery Manager with Gardee, but has agreed to take this on by herself 🎉

Practice is a hot topic right now, and we want to communicate the progress, prepare the launches, and ensure we are decomposing/sequencing like bosses. So we asked the baddest boss in town to help out 😁. Hammertime Kim is coming in and helping with those roles 🎊

Last, but most certainly not least, with Kim focusing on Practice and Platform, that left a need for Partnerships. Ross is going to flex a bit out of his comfort zone and join the Shapers Guild and take on the roles that Kim was handling for Partnerships (ensuring we are continuously delivering value and reducing risk every day with how we decompose and sequence our work while also communicating this progress spectacularly). 🙌🏾

“Greatness is not measured by what a man or woman accomplishes, but by the opposition/struggle, he or she has overcome to reach their goals.” —Dorothy Height

Thank you all for helping us overcome, and continue our quest for greatness 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

I don’t think I need to add more to this.

This post was so clear, and inspired a tremendous amount of confidence that we are truly believing in the feedback-loop philosophy.

Well done y’all, well done!
